“Donkey Kong kill screen coming up”

Made by the legendary Miyamoto, Donkey Kong was a break through game for Nintendo, especially outside of Japan. It’s based on a simple premise of getting Jumpman (as he was known before he became Mario) to rescue his lady from the clutches of Donkey Kong at the top of the screen. The gameplay was responsive, easy to get in to but insanely difficult to master, indeed most players don’t make it past the first level!

The record score for Donkey Kong is one of the most coveted in classic gaming today after the documentary “King of Kong” shone a light on this strange and compelling retro high score scene. The current high score was set as recently as June 2020 by Robbie Lakeman with a score of 1,260,700, and it changes hands regularly so don’t expect it to remain.  In comparison most people are doing well if they get into 5 figures!

It’s a true icon of an arcade cabinet but remains as hard as nails. Still the machine is in the bar for anyone who has ever seen that documentary and wants to test their skills, or remembers DK from their childhood, but just be prepared to get angry…!
